Hearst’s recently created Strategy department brings Consumer Data expertise together with Research & insight, B2B marketing and Commercial Development to provide a strong strategic foundation to support the commercial efforts of the business.

The Consumer Data team provides analytics, architecture and technical support both to the wider Strategy department and to the commercial and consumer teams across the business.

THE ROLE

The Lead Consumer Data Analyst has ownership the consumer analytics function at Hearst UK. This involves scoping and leading the implementation of crucial analysis projects, with the support of two direct reports and working closely with the Head of Consumer Data to influence strategic decision making and analytics development.

The role will also be responsible for standardising reporting metrics and tools across the business, building a “single version of the truth” and common taxonomy to facilitate better communication between different business areas and more clarity for senior decision makers within the business.

Analytics Research and Development
Commission and lead projects looking at opportunities to better apply knowledge derived from our consumer data to the commercial benefit of the business.
Review new analytics tools for potential value to Hearst UK.
Work closely with the Data Engineer to guide development of Hearst’s data architecture to support the needs of the analytics team.
Build expertise of both the data sets and analytics tools in order to support the stakeholders and analytics team.
Develop concise and visually engaging dashboards to inform business strategy.

Standardisation
Lead the creation and maintenance of a universal taxonomy, to be applied across content and interest categories.
Work with the senior team and the rest of the business to identify metrics linked to value creation and aligned to the strategic commercial goals of the business. Promote these metrics internally as indicators of performance and incorporate into high-level business reporting.

Management
Guide the day-to-day activities of the direct reports, using agile methodology to enable the team to balance their workload and prioritise requests in line with the commercial needs of the business.
Promote the distribution of tasks across the team, enhancing the skills of individual team members and facilitating a wider base of support for the different business units. 
Reduce the distinction between different analytics tasks and support team members to leverage skills from their different areas of expertise to the good of the Strategy department and business as a whole.
Analyse the skills required by the team and work to secure training when required to maximise performance.
Mentor the team, supporting their adoption of more advanced tools and techniques, either new or currently in employed in the business.

THE PERSON

Required
Degree-level qualification in a relevant scientific field (Computer Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Economics etc.)
Relevant professional experience over at least two years
Advanced-level SQL, with at least two years direct application
Experience developing dashboards using Tableau or similar BI  visualisation tool
Focus on attention to detail, data accuracy and practice that maintains data integrity above all else
Ability to work effectively with teams across the business from a number of disciplines
Strong presentation and communication skills, the ability to make information available in a way that is tailored to and captivates the intended audience

Desirable
Working experience of cloud-based data storage and analysis technologies
Working experience of advanced analytics technologies (SAS, R, SPSS) and scripting languages
Experience working in an agile environment
A keen interest in consumer media and the sectors in which we operate
An ability to work on own initiative and find new opportunities to monetize our consumer data
