Job Summary/Purpose:

 

As Senior Manager/Director you will provide advice and counsel to the Publisher of the San Antonio-Express-News.  The incumbent will manage HR activities such as job design, recruitment, onboarding process, employee relations, performance management, training & development and talent management. Responsible for promoting corporate values and shaping a positive culture.  

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Plan, direct and manage all human resources initiatives; recruitment, compensation, benefits, training, payroll, performance management, diversity initiatives, and employee engagement.
  • Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy.
  • Bridge management and employee relations by addressing demands, grievances and other issues.
  • Advice and counsel to the Publisher. Coach and advise employees regarding HR policies, practices and procedures. 
  • Automate and streamline requisition and offer processes.
  • Enhance the organization’s human resources by planning, implementing, and evaluating employee relations and human resources policies, programs, and practices.
  • Maintain the work structure by updating job requirements and job descriptions for all positions.
  • Supports organization staff by establishing a recruiting, assessments, and interviewing program; counseling managers on candidate selection; conducting and analyzing exit interviews; and recommending changes.
  • Prepares employees for assignments by establishing and conducting orientation and training programs.
  • Ensures legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource federal and state requirements, conducting investigations, maintaining records, and representing the organization at hearings when necessary.
  • Enforces management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending human resource policies and procedures.
  • Help manage and direct work of the HR Coordinator.
  • Cultivates professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources and/or Business Administration or equivalent experience; Master's degree and/or PHR/SPHR/SHRM Certification a plus.
  • 6+ years in an HR leadership/management role
  • Recruiting experience and/or training
  • Oracle system HRIS experience
  • Payroll knowledge and/or experience
  • Knowledge base in Labor Law, IR or HR management
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to collaborate and influence others
  • Ability to be comfortable with high volume workload and take a "roll up your sleeves" stance to get the job done in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to take ownership of tasks, projects, and daily responsibilities
