Job Description: Senior News Leader

Are you passionate about regional, state and local news and want a key leadership position inside one of the West Coast’s largest newsrooms?

The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for a senior-level news editor to lead and develop an ambitious staff of editors and writers. The right candidate is inspiring and creative, but also knows the importance of jumping on breaking news that affects Californians’ lives. Our newsroom’s goals are simple: earn new readers and save the world.

The Chronicle’s readership focus is on SFChronicle.com, so insight and interest in subscriber-focused, digital news sites is required. We don’t do clickbait. We also don’t do boring. Our content is refreshing and relevant, providing what our readers need to know in an engaging way, and in a variety of formats.

There’s a reason this job post doesn’t include a title. We are looking for the right person around whom to build a team to crush 2020 and beyond. This person could be someone in a top position at a smaller organization, or someone at a larger news outlet with interest in running a bigger team. The position has opportunities for significant career growth contingent upon the interest and ambitions of the candidate.

Individual Duties/Expectations:
  • Manage and develop an extraordinary team of editors and reporters.
  • Oversee the quality of the local news report for the largest West Coast news organization north of SoCal.
  • Develop engaging enterprise stories and investigations while finding creative ways to tell stories and inform readers.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow editors as well as the design, photography and digital teams and others.
  • Excellent editing skills are a must, as is a history of getting the big scoop and finding compelling narratives.
  • Recruit and train excellent journalists from a variety of backgrounds.

The Idea Candidate Will Have:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in an editorial role and managing a team.
  • A passion for local and state-wide news and a curiosity about people and issues.
  • An eye for a good story, ambition to publish great journalism and a vision for engaging readers through a variety of story forms.
  • A history of working with reporters to get the big scoop.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues across departments and the public – we don’t hire jerks.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, and the ability to effectively juggle multiple deadlines and tasks.

What we offer:
  • An open, transparent and supportive work environment with high morale -- #nodrama
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package, including medical, dental, 401K, vacation and sick time
  • A commitment to diversity, inclusion, fairness and respect.
  • Excellent work-life balance – we’re family and dog friendly.
  • The opportunity to tell the story of San Francisco – the city whose people change the world!
