Are you a digital native with solid audience instincts and excellent news judgment? The Houston Chronicle is looking for a talented journalist to help grow and engage our online audience as part of a digital operations team that continuously updates the homepages of two news websites; engages hundreds of thousands of readers daily on social media; implements SEO strategies and audience analytics training for the rest of the newsroom; produces more than a dozen daily and weekly newsletters; and collaborates with other departments to innovate and launch new products.


* Identify and optimize the best staff and wire content for the Houston Chronicle’s free (Chron.com) and premium (HoustonChronicle.com) websites.

* Implement campaigns that grow audience around editorial products.

* Craft credible headlines that are optimized for search and social media.

* Add impactful visual and multimedia elements that elevate the user experience on our platforms.

* Evaluate website traffic trends in an effort to make decisions on both daily content and longer term content development that will grow local traffic.

* Promote and distribute news content on channels most likely to engage the audience.

* Build positive working relationships with newsroom staff and management, work collaboratively on enterprise content, and create new content opportunities.


* 2-3 years experience in digital media and journalism.

* Understanding of web metrics and analytics tools to measure audience behavior.

* Ability to write clever headlines that pull readers into a post.

* Ability to organize time, troubleshoot technical problems, balance audience and journalistic mandates, and make quick decisions with sound editorial judgment.

* Capable of researching, interviewing and writing original news articles.

* Knowledge of SEO best practices and AP Style.

* Emotional intelligence, collaborative mindset, strong interpersonal skills and grace under pressure

* Comfort with constantly evolving technology, and ability to adapt quickly and bring others along.

* Schedule flexibility (nights, weekends, holidays).
