Crime and Courts Reporter / San Francisco Chronicle

The San Francisco Chronicle is seeking an aggressive, enterprising reporter skilled at developing sources and finding scoops to lead crime and justice coverage in our region.

This is an opportunity for an experienced journalist with a passion for criminal justice reporting to become a key member of The Chronicle’s Metro team, the heart of one of the West Coast’s largest and most ambitious newsrooms.

This reporter will find the untold stories, dig beyond the official statements, uncover crime trends and routinely beat the competition, developing the insight and authority to tell stories about how well criminal justice agencies and leaders are doing their jobs, as well as produce deeply reported narratives and investigations.

Duties:
  • Cover police and sheriff’s department, district attorney’s office and criminal courts in a key Bay Area community or region.
  • Develop sources within these institutions and community and advocacy groups, and provide authoritative coverage that makes an impact.
  • Jump in on breaking crime news and take the lead on major stories such as officer-involved shootings.
  • Produce work on multiple platforms, with an emphasis on digital, employing a mix of storytelling forms, from narratives to explainers, lists and multimedia presentations including interactive graphics podcasts.
  • Make public information requests that form the basis of exclusive, hard-hitting stories.

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience at a daily newspaper, magazine or web publication or the equivalent. Experience covering crime and justice is preferred.
  • Strong news judgment, excellent journalistic instincts and attention to detail.
  • Able to work collaboratively with other teams in the newsroom, including digital, photo, design and investigations.
  • Skilled at growing digital audience through story selection, headline writing, tweeting, tracking online metrics.
  • Able to write clear and compelling copy, and to move easily from breaking news to analysis to long-form storytelling. Adept at finding and using data to bolster reporting.
  • Able to adapt to a fast-changing news environment.

Mission: SFChronicle.com delivers the Bay Area’s best journalism and is recognized as the best large newspaper website in California. It is the Bay Area’s authoritative online news source, focused on San Francisco but inclusive of all California and Western news that reflects the unique Bay Area experience. We publish the stories that hit close to home for our readers every day.
