Assistant Metro Editor

Would you like to work with world-class journalists at Northern California’s most indispensable media organization? Do you have high-level skills in editing, multimedia storytelling and team-building?


The San Francisco Chronicle is seeking an ambitious, versatile, creative journalist with a knack for working across print and digital platforms to step into a vital role in its news department. The successful candidate has strong news judgment and leadership skills and excels at collaboration. The Chronicle is an innovative and friendly newsroom. We are looking for a generous editor who thrives on breaking stories, driving the Bay Area conversation and helping reporters bring their work to the next level of excellence.

What will you do?
  • Manage and develop a team of reporters.
  • Find and assign print and digital stories on multiple beats.
  • Edit stories and multimedia assets for grammar, style, accuracy and balance.
  • Develop engaging enterprise stories and investigations.
  • Promote content on social media and engage readers across platforms.
  • Find creative ways to tell stories and inform readers.
What will you need to be successful?
  • A minimum of three to five years of professional experience working in a fast-paced news environment and publishing digital content.
  • At least three to five years of editing experience is preferred, but a reporter with an excellent track record would be considered.
  • Thorough knowledge of grammar and Chronicle and AP style, as well as local, state and national news,
  • An eye for a good story and an ambition to publish great stories, with a vision for engaging readers through a variety of story forms.
  • Demonstrated experience as a clear communicator with the ability to turn ideas into finished products.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with fellow editors and the design, photography and digital teams as well as a variety of people, internally and externally.
  • Be highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated success working in a deadline-driven environment.
